Body training.
Physical training across the floor with emphasis
on flexibility, balance, energy, rhythm, co-ordination, precision,
center, concentration, strength, grounding, breathing and consciousness.
The physical training is designed to bring the body to a more original
form, closer to where it would be with a more balanced, more natural
life. In Butoh, all muscles are taught to be controlled: from the
small ones in the eyes to the major groups in the body.
An efficient system of manipulations that stretch, heal, and make
the body more pliable follows the physical dance training. Developed
by Chinese acrobats, the manipulations give the dancer indications
of where to let go and directions he could move towards.
The participants will become acquainted with Hatha yoga and Sufi
whirling as well as the three thousand year old Chinese Qi Gong
exercises which regenerate the meridians and realign the muscles,
bones and tendons.
When he trains the body, the dancer confronts his culture and the
history of past generations carried by the cells of the body. As
they come alive through gestures and movements in the dance, one
might say, that, if the dancer is from Iceland, it becomes and Icelandic
dance, or if he is an aboriginal from Australia, it becomes an Australian
dance.
Part of the work takes place outdoors, in the mountains.
